This audio was digitized from old tapes in preparation for a book, "Rumi Comes to America." Ground zero for America's love affair with Rumi began 40 years ago when a group of people working with English author, Reshad Feild invited Suleyman Dede, the Sheikh of Konya, to Los Angeles. Dede had entered the Mevlevi way as a young man, right before Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the founder of the Republic of Turkey, shut down the dervish brotherhoods. Now in his 70s, Dede brings the seed of Mevlana to the West to blossom. A few weeks later, Coleman Barks learned about Rumi for the first time, and the rest is history. This recording is being retranslated and will be included in the book.
